Why us Softies are doing such a Hard-out Challenge
Jon and I are hardening ourselves up in preparation for Live Below the Line. Cause we are Soft-As.
For Lent, we talked about giving up wine / coffee / chocolate. Then we just avoided the conversation until it was too late and Lent already started, and well, you can’t start Lent late, there’s no point in that, it’s a spiritual thing anyway, mostly, faith not works right? Or was it faith…with works? I’m confident that someone in the Bible said something about faith and works that releases us from a “religious” obligation to actually go without something for a period of time. Amen.
Then I signed us up for the Live Below the Line challenge. Together with Jon’s parents (who are the opposite of Soft. We are absolutely the weak-links in this team).
Here we are, eating on $2.85 a day for five days. H.A.R.D.
So, what makes HARD worth it? Well, thanks for asking. A worthy cause.
Empower is my favourite cause at Tearfund. It’s all about projects that work with communities to unlock opportunities that help them out of poverty. Wasn’t that Pithy? What a COMPELLING explanation. Yeah, ok, I’m in Marketing, and we’ve often found it a struggle to tell the masses about this cause in a quick and easy way for this quick and easy consumer world.
It's so much simpler to say “Here’s a simple Problem and here’s a simple Solution.” But Empower is not always easy to explain, because poverty isn’t easy to explain. It’s not just about giving people money. Yes, Empower works to increase livelihoods, but when a woman is given the opportunity to join a savings group, it does more than just improve her ability to access credit. It gives her confidence. It’s a safe place to use her voice. It can change her family’s view of what she can contribute. Now multiply that by all the women in a community. And you get more than money in pockets.
It is difficult to “sell” this work when part of its amazingness comes from the willingness of people to sit down and take a wee little bit of time to dig a bit deeper and learn why it’s so amazing.
I'm really proud of a video we created to showcase the impact of Empower (below). And it's a slow burner, but it's worth it because amazing doesn’t happen in a blink of an eye. Amazing takes time. And amazing things sometimes need a bit more of OUR time. So newsflash, poverty is not easily solved. It’s a hard, but worthy challenge for us as global citizens to take on. Just like Live Below the Line.
$2.85 a day for 5 days is hard to do. But why are we so afraid of a little bit of difficulty?
P.S. please support us! What I’m asking of you is easy. Show your support (preferably in dollars).
P.P.S That cute photo of Russell eating a piece of fruit is click-bait.
We're doing LBL because we believe in the Power of Together.
We've signed up to Live Below the Line because together, we can make a real difference against global poverty. We're inspired by the work of Tearfund and wanted to support them by raising money as part of our five-day challenge.
Please help us help them by giving whatever you can using the 'Donate' button. The more people that know about LBL, the greater the impact, so please also spread the word by sharing our page with your friends and family.
Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot! Together, we're helping enable vulnerable families around the world to help themselves out of poverty.
